As this intricate and personal album continues to dominate the charts and spark conversation amongst fans, one thing remains clear: Ariana Grande has, once again, left her mark on the music industry with her unique blend of pop and R&B. As the album continues to make waves in the industry, fans can’t help but wonder what the future holds for Ariana Grande.
Nearly four years after her last music drop with her album “Positions,” Ariana Grande has made her long-awaited re-entry into the music industry with the release of the album “Eternal Sunshine” on March 8. This album almost immediately reached the top of the charts, with approximately 95 million streams, and stayed at the number one spot in the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart for two weeks in a row.
Despite the achievements this album has obtained, fans have many mixed emotions.
“I listened to ‘The Boy is Mine’ and to be honest, it wasn’t what I anticipated,” math teacher Ms. Westwater said. “It felt planned and it wasn’t what I expected.”
“The songs aren’t that bad, I just think they’re overplayed a bit. I liked the beats of some of the songs though, but they just aren’t my favorite,” seventh grader Ellie Huang said.
The songs in this album have multiple references throughout it. Grande’s new hit single, “Yes, And?” relate to some of her previous songs and experiences. The lyric “if you find yourself in a dark situation, just turn on your light and be like” indicates one of her own songs, “The Light is Coming.” Grande wrote this song about overcoming the dark times in her life by finding the “light” within herself. In addition to this, the closing track of “Eternal Sunshine” incorporates a recording of Marjorie Grande, Ariana Grande’s beloved grandmother.
The album title refers to Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet’s 2004 film, “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” In a 2015 interview from “Live with Kelly and Michael,” Grande expressed her love and admiration for Jim Carrey, the man who is being honored by this album.
Grande’s “We Can’t Be Friends” is the follow-up single to “Yes, And?” This passionate and sentimental anthem has seen significant popularity on TikTok, along with another one of Grande’s recent hits, “Bye.” Given the immense influence the app has on music trends, it is no surprise that Grande’s album has made its appearance in millions of videos.
