With the start of a new year came a chance for the fashion industry to unveil recent celebrity trends. The annual Critics Choice Awards serves as an opportunity for audiences to dissect such trends, determining the style statements that define the upcoming year. The looks were showcased by celebrities that include Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone and Tom Holland in renowned brands such as Louis Vuitton, Dior and Valentino.
One trend that made a noticeable appearance on this red carpet was the presence of floral patterns. Many celebrities were seen wearing strong floral themes, including celebrities Margot Robbie, Ali Wong, Emily Blunt and Quinta Brunson. Another prevalent trend was the absence of flashy jewelry, with many who walked the red carpet such as Reese Witherspoon, Greta Gerwig and Camila Mormons making a departure from the typical necklace, perhaps to shift the focus onto their attire.
Students at New Hyde Park Memorial have noticed additional trends on the red carpet, such as the popularity of bows, the “off-shoulder” look and more.
“Many of the women wore either white or black dresses, and many of the dresses had a unique touch to them. For example, some dresses had ruffles while others had bows,” sophomore Shalini Chatoorang said. “Danielle Brooks, who was wearing Monsoori, caught my eye because her dress was extremely different from the other dresses. The whole dress consisted of pink ruffles and a black bow to top it off.”
Men’s fashion commanded the attention of the audience as well, with a plethora of suits from esteemed labels like Valentino, Louis Vuitton, Saint Laurent and many more popular designers. Many celebrities, including Jeremy Allen White, Lenny Kravitz, Cillian Murphy, Mark Ruffalo and Jason Segel, were spotted without ties, hinting at another possible trend for 2024. While some say that male celebrities, including Coleman Domingo and Pedro Pascal, have shown up in interesting and unique outfits, others claim that there is a major lack of effort in most male celebrities’ fashion choices compared to women’s fashion choices.
“Pedro Pascal and his ‘arm sling’: I love that he turned the negative of having a medical device into a positive! He managed to make it an interesting part of his outfit, and he looked great,” business chairperson Ms. Zeppieri said.
“A difference that I noticed was that the men paled in comparison to the women. Most of the men wore simple suits while the women wore complex dresses,” sophomore Calum Rouzier said.
The process of preparing a piece to wear for events like the Critics Choice Awards, Grammys and Golden Globe Awards takes months to complete. The design for a custom piece includes many factors, such as following the celebrity’s sense of style, the current fashion trends and the aesthetics of the event.
Events like the 2024 Critics Choice Awards give audiences, whether members of the fashion community or not, a chance to see new looks that could become possible trends for the year.
