With the commencement of the 2024-2025 school year, New Hyde Park Memorial welcomes Mr. Kostkowicz, the new athletic director. Mr. Kostkowicz was the previous athletic director at Valley Stream South and was also a coach for a variety of sports. Thrilled to collaborate with coaches and players, Mr. Kostkiewicz is ready to help contribute to the success of New Hyde Park athletics.
Q: Can you tell us about your background? What led you to become an athletic director?
JK: I have a diverse background in sports, with experience in coaching football, wrestling, baseball, lacrosse and badminton. I played football at the collegiate level and later transitioned into teaching and coaching for 25 years. For the past seven years, I served as the athletic director at Valley Stream South before coming to New Hyde Park. My experiences in various athletic programs have helped me understand the importance of strong leadership and effective communication. I became an athletic director because I wanted to create an environment where student-athletes can thrive both on and off the field, and to ensure that our programs are enriching and supportive.
Q: What excites you most about joining our school’s athletic program?
JK: I’m particularly excited about the sense of community here. The commitment to student development and the enthusiasm for athletics is evident. I look forward to collaborating with passionate coaches, dedicated athletes, and supportive families to build a vibrant athletic culture.
Q: What is your vision for the future of athletics at our school? What are some of your goals for the athletic department in your first year here?
JK: My vision is to cultivate a comprehensive athletic program that prioritizes skill development, sportsmanship and academic excellence. In my first year, I intend to collaborate with staff and students to develop a five year strategic plan aimed at enhancing our facilities and other key aspects of our athletic programs. Additionally, I will focus on increasing community engagement and implementing initiatives that foster leadership and teamwork among our student-athletes.
Q: What role do you see athletes playing in the overall student experience?
JK: Athletes play a crucial role in shaping the school spirit and fostering a sense of belonging. They serve as role models, demonstrating the value of hard work, dedication, and resilience. Additionally, their involvement in various activities enriches the overall student experience and promotes school pride.
Q: What advice would you give to student-athletes who want to succeed both on and off the field?
JK: My advice would be to maintain a balanced perspective. Prioritize time management and set clear goals, both academically and athletically. Don’t hesitate to seek help when needed, and always strive for improvement. Remember that being a student-athlete is a privilege and embracing both aspects will lead to greater success.
Q: What qualities do you think make a strong athletic director?
JK: A strong athletic director should possess excellent communication skills, a deep understanding of athletics, and the ability to inspire and motivate others. They should be approachable, collaborative and committed to fostering a positive environment. Additionally, having a strategic vision and being adaptable to change are key qualities that contribute to effective leadership.
