On October 15, Victoria’s Secret held their annual promotional event: the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Since its debut in 1995, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has been a major marketing platform for the brand. After a hiatus back in 2018 due to backlash and accusations about sexism, comments about transgender and plus sizes models, the company implemented changes to address these issues.
A significant change this year was the introduction of a female-led team, focused on increasing diversity on the runway. The show celebrated women’s empowerment and individuality. This is symbolized by the iconic wings, which now represent more than just fashion but also the strength and diversity of women. The different races, generations and sizes of the cast helped to showcase the rebranding of Victoria’s Secret.
Musical artists like Tyla as well as Blackpink’s Cher and Lisa participated as Victoria’s Secret Angels, and supermodels Adriana Lima, Bella Hadid, Anok Yai and Tyra Banks also lit up the runway.
The fashion was the focal point for many viewers. From flowing capes to intricate crystal designs, the variety of styles played crucial role in the production’s visual spectacle.
Millions of fans tuned in to watch their favorite models, performers and outfits come to life. Most notably, the show brought a refreshing change in its focus on diversity and inclusivity, resonating with viewers both at NHP and across the globe.
“I found the show entertaining mainly because I enjoy fashion but particularly this show had a lot of very high profile models and of course the return of Adriana Lima so it was a big moment for the industry. I also enjoy the musical performances, but I will say none have been able to beat Rihanna’s performance in 2012,” junior Anastasia Kostakos said. “As with any fashion show, I found the looks to be hit or miss. I always love the wings, and I especially loved Lila Moss’s wings for this show. I found that for most of the looks, there was one component that I didn’t like but otherwise the rest of the outfit was successful.”
“The show was entertaining because you could see all diverse models walking with their own style, it shows how people can be so diverse yet united at the same time. The shows are super entertaining and add on to the overall experience of the show. This year, I loved Lisa’s show; she was amazing,” junior Kitty Guan said.
“Honestly, I didn’t think it was as bad as people thought. It was extremely underwhelming compared to previous years in terms of outfits and wings but I think the opening with Bella Hadid was already great enough as is. Also it’s understandable since Victoria’s Secret has been gaining less revenue over the years,” junior Isabelle Chan said.
The show placed an emphasis on embracing change and celebrating the essence of individuality. This year’s event set the tone for the future, signaling that empowerment and inclusivity aren’t just trends but essential components of the brand’s identity.
