Over the past few years, pickleball has been rising in popularity all over the United States and in New Hyde Park. Initially, the sport was created by a group of friends looking to come up with a new game to entertain their children. However, the sport quickly gained traction among people of all ages and backgrounds due to its accessibility, social aspects and its simplicity.
“Pickleball is an awesome sport that’s fun, easy to learn, and great for people of all ages. Because the sport is not as tiring as some other sports, it’s perfect for beginners or people who just want to have fun without too much running around,” junior Andrew Tso said.
Pickleball is a paddle or racket sport in which two players (singles) or four players (doubles) use the paddle to hit a hollow plastic ball over a 34-inch-high net until one is unable to return the ball. Similar to tennis, both sports have rallies, similar techniques and rackets. The rising sport can be played indoors or outdoors.
The recent construction of pickleball courts at Tully Park right next to New Hyde Park Memorial High School has been a favorite amongst NHP residents. Replacing the old tennis courts, there have been a few rule changes to enter the court. Registration of an ID to show proof of residency is required to participate. There are three ways to prove that you’re a resident: tax bills or deeds, current utility bills and a driver’s license or non-driver’s ID or birth certificates for children.
The construction of the pickleball court has been a widely used feature in Tully Park; it has been receiving many players since its opening, making the park livelier than ever.
