The manner in which a Christmas tree should be decorated is a common debate amongst the NHP community. Some argue that it should be decorated with a set theme that consists of specific colors, such as silver and gold. However, others believe that a tree should be decorated miscellaneously with a variety of ornaments. The latter would be classified a “nostalgic” theme, whereas the former would be considered a “themed” tree.
Whether it is a blow-up reindeer or an assortment of lights, various creative and innovative ways to decorate for the holidays have been established over the years. For decades, people have figured out ways to embellish their homes, despite their wealth or environment.
During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, those who could not afford a tree built wooden pyramids as a replacement. They used paper, fruit and leaves to impersonate what an authentic tree was back then. Many people today have access to a diverse selection of decorations for their trees, such as homemade or store-bought ornaments, garlands and lights. Another favored decoration for a Christmas tree is a popcorn and cranberry garland, which dates back to 1842.
Students at NHP expressed their opinions on whether a nostalgic tree or themed tree is more appropriate for the holidays.
“I believe that Christmas trees should be decorated with a set theme,” senior Steven Sibrian said. “They are more sophisticated and modern. It also creates a cohesive look that is easier to pull off.”
“I like them miscellaneous because it is more personal,” English teacher Ms. Paresi said. “You can put up your ornaments you had from when you were younger or from special occasions. You can also add to the collection yearly.”
Finances are also a consideration for many when it comes to making decisions regarding holiday decor. Some believe that it may be easier to use older decorations because decorating with a set theme can prove to be expensive. For example, individual decoration sets are often more than $100 on online retailers.
“I prefer a tree with a variety of decorations,” health teacher Ms. Leydon said. “If you have a set theme, you can only use the decor for one year, and then you have to go out and buy other stuff. Whereas if it’s miscellaneous, you can use old and nostalgic ornaments, and ones from different milestones.”
