Centre Stage’s latest production, “Down the Rabbit Hole,” was showcased on January 31 and February 1. The performance was a spin on the novel “Alice in Wonderland” written by Lewis Carroll, with the show consisting of recognizable tracks such as, “Let’s Get Loud” and “Rain on Me.” Centre Stage Production, an inclusive drama program for special needs and general students, held hourly practices every Thursday beginning in September before the show to prepare. At practice, members learned the dance routines as well as the script. The actors separated into groups and got to work right away to work on lines, dances and songs.
“The experience of being in Centre Stage is one that everyone should experience. Everyone in the play wants to be there. They look forward to going to rehearsals but are so eager for opening night to show their families and friends,” volunteer Ms. Leydon said. “Being able to experience the joy and laughter of all students involved is incomparable. These kids put everything they have into this show.”
In prior years, Centre Stage has produced “Happily Ever After at NHP” and “The Wizard of New Hyde Park.” Each year there has been support from the administration, parents and community. These performers showed their dedication by attending practices and learning their dance routines and scripts. The club officers and leaders were involved in the process, choreographing the dance numbers and helping to organize the production.
“On Saturday, the second day of production, my sister Inaya and I were helping the Flowers say their lines on stage,” junior Arianna Muhammad said. “After the girls finished reading their lines perfectly, which they had worked so hard to perfect, they came over to us and gave us a big hug. They were so excited and proud of themselves, just like Inaya and I were, and that honestly made the whole experience worth it.”
Some of those involved in Centre Stage have shared positive experiences during the preparation and performance of the show.
“The experience was so fun and wholesome. I highly recommend it to underclassmen who want to get involved because I honestly regret not doing it sooner,” senior Zury Contreras said.
“My favorite memory is everyone up on stage, doing their best, having fun, making new friendships and shining bright,” Centre Stage Production adviser Ms. Bocchino said.
