On March 4, the New Hyde Park Senior High Mathletes team concluded a successful season, with strong performances all around. The Senior High Mathletes team spent the year, under the direction of their adviser Mr. Sime, participating in the Nassau County Interscholastic Math League and the Nassau Math Tournament.
NCIML involves monthly competitions, happening six times throughout the year, starting in October. There are 10 students in each team, with New Hyde Park having an A and B team. The composition of the A team remained constant throughout the year, with the B team rotating through members of NHP Mathletes. For the first five competitions, students individually answered six questions. The last competition was held in teams with both teams traveling to Sewanhaka High School to partake; there, teams worked together to answer ten questions.
In the league, the New Hyde Park A team placed 8th out of the over 100 teams in the county, reaching the top 20 for the third year in a row, and beating all other teams in the Sewanhaka Central High School District. The New Hyde Park B team placed 26th in the county.
“The best part about it is that the team is very strong all around, including a number of very talented 11th and 10th graders,” said Mathletes adviser Mr. Sime. “We’ve also had more active members of Mathletes this year than in the last several years.”
On February 27, two teams of five members travelled to SUNY Old Westbury in order to participate in NMT. The upper division team of Maximus Josue, Darsh Mirchandani, Sebastian Song, Joshua Wang and Clayton Yu competed against 58 other teams and got 12th place. In the individual rankings, Clayton Yu, who also serves as club president, got 7th place out of 142 seniors across Nassau County.
“Our team members all moved as one and we had plenty of time to check over our answers. Although there were areas to improve in, New Hyde Park crushed it this year,” President Clayton Yu said.
In the lower division, Alan Aphraim, Obed Glanson, Adittya Nischal, Ethan Situ and Axl Su placed 20th place out of the 38 teams participating.
While many members that performed well are graduating, many members of the club express hope for the future and note that the club still has potential for improvement.
“The future of Mathletes looks promising. It seems like we still have a lot of potential in our club with both our current and incoming members next year,” sophomore Obed Glanson said.
“In the future of the club I really hope to see more girls on the team. Out of the 20 people on the teams I was the only girl and I didn’t see any other team that had a similarly large gender ratio,” junior Disha Chakraborty said.
While the team performed well, there is still room to improve, and the club aims to continue its strong performances.
