NHP students rank games ranging from "Valorant" to "The Last of Us."
Video games have been a staple in the lives of children, teenagers and adults alike. Whether it is a way to unwind after a long school day or a source of entertainment, gaming serves a variety of purposes. In recent years, simulation, action-adventure and narrative-driven video games have surged in popularity. Students and teachers at New Hyde Park discuss their opinions and experiences with these trending games and what sets them apart.
Spring marks the beginning of baseball season and a spike in sports-themed video games. One of the most popular sports titles at NHP is “MLB The Show 25,” which lets players create characters and advance through various stages, starting from high school baseball to the MLB.
“I have been playing ‘MLB The Show’ for years, so it is always something I look forward to when spring rolls around and baseball season starts,” math teacher Mr. Brusca said. [2:52-2:58]
First-person shooters have also dominated the gaming industry, drawing players with their fast-paced, action-packed gameplay and intense, weapon-based combat. These games immerse players in high-energy scenarios where quick reflexes and strategic thinking are key to success.
Released in June 2020 by Riot Games, “Valorant” is another popular FPS game among students at NHP. Players can choose from a range of characters, each with distinct abilities, and compete in multiple rounds focused on eliminations.
“I like how there are different game modes and different characters so there’s more to play with instead of playing the same thing over and over again,” junior Jaelyn Jaimon said. [0:25-0:33]
“ULTRAKILL” is a fast-paced, intense FPS released in September of 2020 by Arsi Hakita Patela. Set in a world where humanity has been wiped out, players control blood-fueled machines navigating the depths of Hell to survive. The game emphasizes stylish, aggressive combat and offers diverse levels, optional challenges and a variety of environments.
“The game has a system where there’s a rating on how well you do (going from D to P), and my favorite part of the game was when I got P, beating one of the hardest levels,” senior Joseph James said. [3:14-3:28]
“Destiny 2,” a first-person shooter game produced by Bungie, provides many competitive options, including player versus player modes and challenging co-op missions. Players take on the role of Guardians, protectors of humanity and the Last Safe City, fighting alien races from the Darkness. Resurrected from death by their Ghost, a fragment of the Traveler, Guardians fight to defend humanity. Set thousands of years into the future, the game’s story revolves around a celestial battle between the Light and Darkness.
“A favorite memory I have is that of me and my cousin—we’d been playing for hours at that point—it was one final push to get our seventh win, which is when you get crazy rewards,” senior Ajwad Karim said. [2:40-2:51]
One key factor behind the popularity of many video games is the inclusion of a compelling storyline. Games like “The Last of Us” feature unique storylines that create a strong connection between players and the characters. Set during a viral outbreak that triggers a zombie apocalypse, the game is lauded for its engaging storytelling, character development and suspenseful gameplay.
“I think the humor and the dialogue is really entertaining and how aesthetically pleasing the game is,” senior Jashlene Layug said. [1:02-1:08]
In addition to the previously mentioned genres, rhythm games have also been gaining popularity. This subgenre focuses primarily on interacting with music. When paired with storylines and action elements, rhythm games offer unique experiences for players, making them an increasingly popular choice.
“My favorite rhythm game is ‘Sekai’ because I loved the songs that were in the game,” senior Sofia Chen said. “Since I really liked Vocaloid and their songs, I fell in love with the characters and their story line.”
From sports-centered to FPS, video games continue to be a staple at New Hyde Park. Games that feature nuanced storylines, memorable characters and innovative elements such as music or sports capture the interest of players and spark engaging discussions among gamers. These diverse experiences not only entertain but also foster a sense of community and excitement within the gaming world.
