On Friday, March 14, NHP’s Hindu Student Association and Sikh Student Association hosted the second annual NHP Holi event. Holi, otherwise known as the festival of colors, is a Hindu festival recognized by various religions. This vibrant festival is celebrated by sharing sweets, spending time with friends and family and joyfully throwing bright colored powders at one another.
“The festival of Holi has a common theme—celebration of new life with your loved ones. It marks the beginning of spring and harvest season, and the victory of good over evil,” HSA and SSA adviser Ms. Bansal said. “As we are a diverse community at NHP, it is a perfect opportunity for everyone to get together and embrace the cultural celebrations.”
Officers from both the HSA and SSA clubs came together and held numerous meetings for the preparation of Holi. Each officer from the clubs brought something that could be of use, such as food, decorations and colors.
“Holi was a very extensive event to plan and set up. Holi celebrates the triumph of good over evil, with the story of Prahlad, a devotee, using his belief to protect himself,” HSA officer Vishnu Suresh said.
“Preparation for the Holi event started about a month and a half before the actual event, as we wanted to plan everything ahead of time so that there would be minimal confusion on the day of the event,” HSA Co-President Oshik Saha said. “I feel that it is a great thing that Holi is being celebrated at NHP. Being able to celebrate our beliefs allows us to teach others who are not well versed in our religions in a fun and friendly way.”
This year, the event included several games. One of these games was Bollywood Charades, where students had to guess the song that was being played. The losing players would be pied in the face. Another activity included the Mango Lassi Challenge—the person who drank the Mango Lassi, a popular Indian yogurt-based drink, the fastest would receive a gift card. Finally, students threw colored powder at each other and played a game of tug-of-war.
“Holi was an incredible event, with colors flying through the crowd. The atmosphere was beautiful, colorful, and most importantly, full of energy. I am very happy I was able to attend this vibrant event, as well as help organize it (along with the HSA and SSA). My favorite moment was the tug-of-war, where both sides were laughing and giving their all to be victorious!” junior Dhara Patel said.
