As the final days of school approach, spring sports slowly come to an end. Junior High, JV, and varsity sports have concluded. This season, students participated in lacrosse, baseball, softball, track and field as well as tennis.
The girls lacrosse team, coached by Ms. Dolan and Ms. Stabile, experienced some highs and lows. Many athletes have received recognition for their work in the season, with Sarah Minelli receiving an all-county honorable mention, Grace Leonard receiving a senior scholar athlete, Francesca Curatolo receiving a Junior All Conference and Brigid O’Connor receiving all conference. Sarah Minelli and Mikela Montes have received and accepted the opportunity to play at a collegiate level at Molloy University and SUNY Canton respectively.
“I loved lacrosse not only for the sport but the team that comes with it. I know we had a lot of fun this season and made some great memories. We also couldn’t have done it without our amazing coaches, Coach Dolan and Coach Stabile,” junior Kiana LaGrasta said.
The varsity boys lacrosse team, led by Coach Milio, has had a strong season, as they finished with a 12-1 record. Senior Nicholas Garofalo received All-County Honorable Mention and junior Brendan Rooney received All-Conference.
The baseball team this year finished off with a 6-9 record and made it to the second round of playoffs. Additionally, three senior student-athletes will be playing at the collegiate level. Jason Torres will be headed to Molloy University, while Charlie Vasquez will be attending Utica University. Dylan Colon will be playing at St. Joseph’s College in Brooklyn.
“It was a great season. There were significant improvements through the season. We had to win the last three games to win, and we beat a tough team to make it to the playoffs. It was a true success for NHP baseball as a whole,” varsity baseball coach Mr. Rotondaro said.
The varsity softball team finished with a record of 7-8. Senior Ava Orbon received an All County award. Senior Gianna Bonnetti and sophomore Eva Baez got All Conference. Junior Kayden Erazo got the unsung hero Nassau County award. The team had some highs and lows but they worked hard together.
“It was a team effort all the way,” senior Ava Orbon said. “We practiced hard and we played hard. Even if we didn’t like the outcome, we knew we tried our best.”
The boys track team was coached by Ms. Collins and Ms. Leydon, and the girls track team was coached by Ms. Bianco and Dr. Kowalczyk. The athletes performed extremely well, with many going to counties this year for events such as the 800m, 400m hurdles, the 4×400 relay and more.
“As a freshman, I wasn’t sure what to expect going into the season, but it turned out to be an amazing experience. The team was really supportive, and I grew a lot as an athlete. Competing at counties in my first year was honestly surreal. I never thought I’d make it that far, and it made all the hard work worth it. I can’t wait for next year!” freshman Annhad Kaur said.
“This spring season, I’ve seen our athletes grow tremendously, both on and off the track. The dedication, resilience and commitment for this sport made this season something truly special,” Coach Bianco said. “It was exciting to see our goals accomplished and beyond. I’m so proud of all the athletes and those that had the opportunity to compete at counties. I look forward to seeing what comes in the 2025-2026 school year.”
Additionally, captain Ruby Cepeda, who committed to Farmingdale State College to run track and field in college, commented on the environment track provided and the experience of committing to college.
“This season of track pushed me beyond my limits and gave me memories and friendships I’ll always carry with me. Ending my high school career on the track surrounded by teammates who became family is something I’ll always be proud of and never forget,” Cepeda said. “Being committed to running track in college still feels surreal. The sport has become such a big part of my life that I couldn’t imagine stopping after high school. I’m grateful for the opportunity and excited to grow as both a runner and a student-athlete at the next level.”
The boys tennis team, coached by Mr. Basil, had a solid season. Students were especially grateful for the guidance provided by their coach and captains this season.
“My past tennis season was genuinely a great experience. What stood out the most was how supportive and positive the environment was,” sophomore Keith Luu said. “Our coach, Mr. Basil, also played a big part in that, too. He always brought energy, made us laugh, and helped make the sport more enjoyable. I’m especially grateful to have started with such a welcoming group, and it makes me really excited to continue next season.”
As this spring season wraps up, student athletes prepare for upcoming pre-season training and the fall sports season. Senior athletes will be missed, and this closes NHP’s 2024-2025 athletic chapter.
