This year’s All-State and alternate musicians from NHP have been announced as the date for the performance approaches. Playing the clarinet, senior Chaewoo Lee was chosen as the All-State performer along with senior singer Leah Del Orbe and junior tuba player Keith Luu as the alternate musicians. The students auditioned at Herricks High School on April 5 and were informed of their results on September 2.
“Thousands of kids auditioned for this around the state and to be selected for it,” music chairperson Mr. Monat said. “Making it on clarinet is not easy and I’m so proud of [Chaewoo]. It’s such an honor to represent music here at NHP with students who have the passion and follow through with their interests.”
With the All-State performance date coming up on December 7, the musicians continue to practice and hone their skills. Lee, set to perform at Eastman Theatre, continues to work closely with her band teacher Ms. Bagley and an outside instructor. She is expected to participate in a performance of three pieces: “The Fool,” “The King of Cups” and “The Tower.” All students performing will practice at Eastman School of Music, known for their highly selective classical music programs.
“I’m so grateful for this amazing opportunity, it feels like all the hours of practice paid off,” Lee said. “Being able to perform as an all-state player means so much to me, I’m also excited to perform with talented musicians all over the state!”
Both alternates have continued to work on their skills and reflect on their achievements.
“While the audition was stressful, I had a lot of fun pushing myself as I auditioned with a more unfamiliar voice type,” Del Orbe said. “I especially struggled with sight reading and I wish I started practicing earlier so I could’ve gotten a 100. Although I’m an alternate, I’m proud of the experience and those who got in are truly talented.”
The accomplishments of these three musicians highlight the dedication and talent within New Hyde Park Memorial’s music program. Their selection for All-State recognition reflects countless hours of practice and passion for their craft. As the performance at Eastman Theatre approaches, the school community celebrates their achievements and looks forward to seeing itself represented with pride and excellence.
