Sept. 11 marks one of the most tragic days in American history, when 2,977 lives were lost. At New Hyde Park Memorial, students and staff came together to commemorate the lives lost and the bravery shown on 9/11.
This year, the school held a flag service, organized through social studies classes. Each student received a small pledge to write about how they would honor the heroes of 9/11. Students then went outside with their class and planted these flags on the front lawn to show NHP’s commitment to the mission and the tragic events that occurred. Some were also displayed on a wall beside a large American flag signed by students across the school.
“I wrote that I wanted to appreciate things more, not only the big achievements, but the small moments that make life meaningful,” senior Shania Jacob said.
Continuing the spirit of service, the Student Council launched a collection drive from September 11 through October 17 to support Nassau County through charity and empathy. Donation boxes were located in the social studies classrooms, the main entrance and the main office, where students could donate items such as toilet paper, boxes of pasta, canned food and many other items.
“By serving others, we hope to continue the spirit of kindness, unity, and hope that rose from 9/11,” Student Council Co-President Ariana Muhammad said.
For many current students, 9/11 feels like distant history: they know of the tragedy but not the personal experiences, stories, and true impact of the day, compared to teachers or alumni who had direct relation to the event or witnessed it firsthand. To combat this issue, teachers have been sharing their own memories and showing documentaries, interviews and news clips to help students understand the profound impact of 9/11.
“I believe it is our responsibility to educate them about that day—what happened, who was affected, and how people came together in the face of tragedy,” English teacher Ms. Ziegler said.
As years pass, the events of 9/11 continue to serve as a solemn reminder of courage, compassion and unity. Through remembrance and education, New Hyde Park Memorial ensures that the legacy of the heroes and victims of that day endures and that future generations never forget the strength that emerged from such unimaginable loss.
