Behind every match played on the fields of New Hyde Park, David Lebron is tirelessly working to keep athletes healthy and motivated. His role as an athletic trainer, although behind the scenes, is key and felt in every practice, game and meet.
“He’s always there, no matter how many people need help,” senior soccer player Sanjna Nischal said. “Even when the room is packed, he makes sure everyone gets the care they need.”
Mr. Lebron is more than just your average trainer. He’s a source of positivity and support for many student-athletes across every sport. Whether it’s taping wrists, managing injuries or simply offering his iconic, bright smile before a game, Mr. Lebron’s presence has become an essential part of NHP in his four years here.
“It feels incredible here. I love each and every team,” Mr. LeBron said. “Every team has their own personality here, yet, everyone is respectful. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”
Whether he is helping a player back onto the field or checking on a student recovering from an old injury, Mr. Lebron’s passion is evident.
“His rehab work is incredible—players come back stronger and ready to play. He’s saved our season more than once by keeping our athletes healthy and preventing small injuries from becoming serious ones,” junior varsity basketball and football coach Mr. Spano said.
Both athletes and coaches alike agree that Lebron is a cornerstone of New Hyde Park athletics. Many students recall personal moments with Mr. Lebron and times when he created a lasting image. However, what truly sets Mr. Lebron apart is his uplifting and kind nature. He brings patience and compassion to every field, even with hundreds of athletes to care for, his ability to stay attentive never goes unnoticed.
“You can’t go anywhere without smiling when you’re with him,” junior Adam Abdullah said.
“Mr. LeBron helped me recover from my muscle tear. He informed me on everything that I needed to know as soon as I told him. Even after I healed, he continued to ask me how I was doing. Now, every time I see him, he offers me a fist bump that cheers me up,” junior soccer player Justin Brower said.
Even after long workdays filled with injuries, practices and games, Mr. Lebron’s smile never fades nor does his drive. Mr. Lebron is not just keeping athletes in the game, he is an essential contributor to NHP’s student athletes’ vigor, pride and heart.
