Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, has officially announced that he will be releasing two final albums, “Atavista” and “Bando Stone & The New World.” These albums will mark the end of his musical projects under the Childish Gambino persona.
“Atavista” will have refined versions of songs from his 2020 album, “3.15.20,” and aims to explore themes of returning to ancestral roots. The album will feature artists such as Ariana Grande, 21 Savage, Kadhja Bonet, Summer Walker, and Young Nudy. Meanwhile, his other album, Bando Stone & The New World, will be released in the summer as a soundtrack.
“I have to say that my favorite track at this point is the title track, ‘Atavista.’ It is a very funky track (which I love) that has a very retro 80s feel to it,” English teacher Mr. Ferrara said. “It is a much less intense album than some of his previous albums, but it is just as quirky and witty as ‘Camp’ and ’03-15-20.’”
Glover has said that he sees no further need to extend his musical career and would rather focus on his Hollywood career. “There’s nothing worse than a third sequel,” Glover said, regarding his music career.
“It upsets me that his music career is ending because he is very influential in my life. His music has helped me get through different situations, and I don’t know how I would’ve gotten through them without his music,” sophomore Rebecca McCorey said.
“I’m going to be pretty bummed out that one of the artists I avidly listen to will stop making new content, though I’ll hold out hope that he comes back every once in a while,” junior Joseph James said. “His music is something I have always used to make me feel better. I remember when ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ came out, his cameo in the movie made me listen to his songs more frequently.”
“I feel like this is something I’ve been hearing for years. His acting schedule has been getting busier, so it makes sense he would want to step back,” science teacher Mr. Freiberg said. “It’s also nice to know he will wrap up that part of his career on his terms. I’m excited for what opportunities this will open to him moving forward.”
Despite the many fans who will be missing his music, Glover is not stepping away from the musical spotlight just yet. He announced a world tour that will take him from France and Germany to Ohio and Florida. He will also stop near New Hyde Park in Brooklyn on August 26 and 27. While the NHP student body expresses their sadness about his retirement, many are also excited to see what his world tour entails.
“It’s going to be great to see him on stage again since his performances are amazing. He always leaves a mark on stage with his music wherever he goes,” junior Karise Buckley said.
