The New Hyde Park girls basketball team has had an excellent season. Their teamwork has been extraordinary, with exceptional performances from every girl on the team. The atmosphere at the games was exhilarating, with the teams and the fans feeding off of each other’s energy.
“I enjoy going to the games and seeing all the fans get excited for the team. I feel that it is important for people of the community to show up to these games,” senior Tyler Lopez said.
The girls varsity basketball team finished with a 9-5 record and was able to reach the playoffs once again. In the first round, the team lost to Elmont Memorial High School. Despite the tough defeat, it does not diminish the players’ accomplishments this season.
“The season had its ups and downs but the way I see it was a great success. With this being my third and final season, I wanted to make the best of it and enjoy every little moment,“ senior Sarah Minelli said.
The team consisted of multiple All-County and All-Conference players which played key roles in their playoff push, one of them being senior Ava Orbon.
Ava has made a strong impact over the past four years of her New Hyde Park career. She demonstrated great leadership skills as a player and a teammate.
“She has learned how to be a great friend and demand greatness, which is the most difficult part of peer leadership,” coach Bello said.
Senior captain Ava Orbon has had a notable four-year career here at New Hyde Park. She has achieved All-County status every year, as well as All-State status as a junior. In her senior season, she accomplished an impressive milestone with 1,000 career points.
Orbon committed to Mount St. Mary College to further her athletic and academic journey.
“I am so proud of myself for how much I achieved throughout my 4 years on varsity. All the support and encouragement from my teammates, coaches, my trainer and family have helped me reach my goals. Playing on varsity my freshman year encouraged me to work harder, be a leader and stay competitive no matter the score of the game,” Orbon said. “I’m extremely excited to continue my journey at Mount St. Mary College. It will be tough, but I will continue to work hard as I always do.”
