Infinite Campus is an app that helps school officials and teachers within the Sewanhaka Central High School District identify their students. Infinite Campus also allows students to view their digital student ID, grades, schedules and more. However, as the 2024-2025 year begins, it has become clear that the platform is not always reliable.
“When I first took attendance on the first day of school, I noticed one of my student’s Infinite Campus pictures was of someone else. At first I wasn’t sure if the name was wrong or if the picture was wrong. I had to confirm with the student,” Spanish teacher Ms. Mei-Chen said. “I informed the student that someone else’s photo was under his Infinite Campus account. I wondered if he knew. I let him know to go down to the main office and have it corrected.”
With this type of malfunction occurring in the first couple weeks of school, students and teachers felt both anxious and curious. As everyone is adjusting to the new year, errors that pose questions about the security of the school can result in confusion.
“If my ID image was swapped with another student, I would feel pretty confused. I would probably ask around to see if it was happening to other people and wait for it to be fixed,” sophomore Aditi Parikh said.
Many students experiencing the issue decided to wait for the bug to fix itself over time. However, as NHP entered its fourth week and the issue was not resolved, waiting proved to be unhelpful.
“I actually didn’t know my picture was of someone else. My teacher, Ms. Mei, pointed it out on the first day of school while taking attendance. I didn’t think much of it, thinking it was going to get fixed, so I left it for a while,” junior Rohan Daniel said. “Then, when I was doing a group project in another class, one of my group mates pointed out that it was not my picture… I think I gave it enough time to fix itself, but after a long time of waiting, it is still incorrect.”
Fortunately for New Hyde Park, the Infinite Campus malfunction appears to be a small mistake within the software. However, as the school year is past its first month, the issue has yet to be resolved, and students are curious as to when their issue will be corrected.
