Coachella 2025, one of the most anticipated music festivals, is set to be a celebration where diverse music, art and culture collide to create an electrifying experience that promises unforgettable performances and groundbreaking art. The event is set to take place on two weekends—April 11 to 13 and 18 to 20—at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California.
“I like watching music festivals because they give me the opportunity to discover new artists and enjoy my favorite music,” junior Morgan Young said.
The inaugural festival took place on October 9-10, 1999, at the Empire Polo Field. Initially conceived as a one-off event by organizer Paul Tollett, its overwhelming success led to the decision to make it an annual celebration, with Tollett and his team setting the stage for its lasting impact.
“I love going to concerts and festivals because the energy of a live concert doesn’t compare to listening to music on a device. Festivals give me a moment of happiness,” Spanish teacher Mrs. Pincay said.
In its early years, Coachella’s lineup was dominated by alternative rock and indie acts, appealing to a young, alternative audience. As the festival’s popularity grew, so did the diversity of its performers. A significant milestone came in 2004, when Radiohead became the first ever Coachella headliner, setting the stage for future expansion. As the years went on, the festival welcomed major acts like Beyoncé and Paul McCartney, reflecting its growing inclusion of both mainstream and eclectic talent.
“It’s good for the [artists], because they could add on towards their listeners and get more followers,” sophomore Sanvi Random said.
Coachella 2025 continues its tradition of offering a diverse lineup by blending established icons with rising stars and modern pop powerhouses. One of the most spoken about additions this year is Green Day, an acclaimed and well known punk rock band formed in 1987. Over the years, they have become a major influence in the punk and pop-punk genres. Despite their decades long career dating back to the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, they are making their Coachella debut. Coming off the success of their 14th album, ‘Saviors,’ Green Day’s inclusion adds a new layer to the festival’s eclectic mix, standing alongside their iconic albums ‘Dookie’ and ‘American Idiot.’
Their presence, alongside acts in the punk genre such as The Misfits and Jimmy Eat World, contrasts with other headliners and performers such as Lady Gaga, Charli XCX and beabadoobee, showcasing Coachella’s ability to feature a wide range of genres. This diversity not only highlights the evolving tastes of festival goers but also reaffirms Coachella as a stage where multiple styles of music can coexist, offering something for everyone.
“Different genres and artists help curate and expose you to new ideas, emotions and cultures, truly broadening your horizons,” senior Alex Schmitt said.
Coachella has clearly evolved from its 1999 beginnings into a global celebration of music, bringing together diverse genres and artists. Coachella 2025 is on track to continue this tradition, offering an unforgettable experience that highlights the power of music to unite, inspire and connect.
