Alex Grant, a senior at New Hyde Park Memorial, has consistently shown his athleticism this year, achieving two new records in track and field. Grant is now the proud record holder of the 100-meter and 200-meter races.
Alex Grant was very confident with his run in the 100-meter dash, knowing that there was a solid possibility that he could break the old record. He was able to accomplish this with a time of 11.34 seconds. Grant ran the 200-meter race in 23.69 seconds, and although he was initially unsure how that time would hold up against past NHP times, it was in fact a record.
“After breaking the 200-meter record I was extremely shocked because I had thought I ran a bad race, later to find out it was our school’s record,” Grant said.
This achievement of breaking two records makes Alex feel many different emotions. He was very proud of his achievements, especially since he overcame many obstacles this year. According to Grant, he had many setbacks with injuries and did not want to rush back onto the track before an injury was fully healed. This strategy worked since he achieved his goals in the end. He also attributed his success to his coaches and teammates. He felt honored to have the coaches and teammates that he did, and they always pushed him to practice more and set new goals. Grant stated that the guidance of his fellow runners and coaches pushed him in the right direction. Confidence was another key to his success, and Alex proves that hard work beats natural talent.
“When I entered high school, I wasn’t even thinking about running track, but during freshman year, I fell in love with the sport,” Grant said.
“What Alex has done is crazy talented,” freshman Joshua Varghese said.
Alex’s coaches are very proud of all of his accomplishments over the years. One of his coaches, Ms. Leydon, stated that she knows that he had been chasing these records for several years, and that watching him not only achieve a personal best but also break a school record was an incredibly rewarding moment. Coach Leydon said it is always so special to see an athlete’s perseverance pay off in such a meaningful way. Leydon also added that to be a standout like Alex, you have to not only invest the time, effort and dedication, but also believe in yourself and know that you are capable of succeeding.
Coach Collins was also very proud of Alex and stated that he should be an inspiration for all student-athletes.
“It means a lot to see Alex break both the 100-meter and 200-meter school records. It’s a testament to the hard work, discipline and dedication he has put in throughout his career,” Coach Collins said.
