David Anthony Burke, professionally known as D4vd, is a singer-songwriter that gained popularity through social media and R&B music. His first major breakthrough single, “Romantic Homicide,” became a prominent song with almost 1.89 billion views, which established the start of his music career. As previously reported in the Chariot Article: “Tragedy strikes the music world as artist faces backlash for teen’s death,” Burke became the subject of widespread controversy following the discovery of human remains in a Tesla registered under his name on September 8, 2025.
“When I first heard the case I was shocked due to Burke’s global popularity as an artist and the serious allegations against him, making it one of the more widely followed criminal cases in recent memory,” science teacher Mr. Denara said.
After a longstanding investigation the remains were identified and recovered as 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez. Early reports suggested that there was a possible connection between Hernandez and Burke, with substantial allegations of a relationship between them despite a staggering age difference. Additional details, including matching tattoos and songs linked to Hernandez, further intensified investigations and public watch.
“I think the situation became much worse once it was confirmed who the victim was, especially considering the alleged relationship and circumstantial age difference between Burke and Hernandez,” sophomore Justin Huang said.
One of the most important updates of the case came from the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office. Within the autopsy report, Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Odey Ukpo stated that Hernandez died from multiple penetrating injuries caused by various objects, with officials ruling the manner of death a homicide. The report showed that the devastating condition of the body made the examination more complex, thus making questions on the injuries still unanswered to investigators. In parts of the report, the autopsy showed that two of Hernandez’s fingers were missing, amplifying the severity of the evidence revealed to the public.
“I was shocked by how graphic the report sounded and how disturbing it made the case feel because it shows how serious the evidence really is,” sophomore Layne Jannicola said.
Primary investigators also highlighted the digital evidence recovered from Burke’s phone. Prosecutors mentioned that a conducted search disclosed a significant amount of explicit and sexual information exchanged between Burke and Hernandez. Furthermore, authorities in the broader case were involved in the seizing of phone data, iCloud records and other items through forensic evidence that they believe connected Burke to the killing and the events that happened afterwards. Prosecutors additionally alleged that Burke purchased tools like a chainsaw and a burn cage, which they said were used in dismembering and concealing the body.
“Learning that investigators found so much digital evidence and other horrific items connected to the case makes it feel more serious and harder to process the lengths of this investigation,” sophomore Vedant Patel said.
David Burke was arrested and charged in connection with the case after months of investigation, marking a major development in the legal proceedings. Prosecutors have said the case involves first-degree murder and other serious allegations, while investigators continue reviewing digital evidence, images and other materials that may help establish a clearer timeline of events. The preliminary hearing was also postponed, delaying the next major court date as both sides continue preparing their arguments.
