On October 27, about forty New Hyde Park students took a day trip to Manhattan to immerse themselves in Spanish culture and explore the background of the language they have been learning. The third annual trip is collaboratively planned by the Spanish Club and International Culture Club, taking students to the well-known site Edge NYC and the Spanish food market Mercado Little Spain.
“Going to the Edge with the Spanish Club and ICC was so much fun! The entire commute to the city was honestly my favorite part,” said senior Hima Binu. “There were so many delicious options in Little Spain but the churros were just the best!”
Seniors took the Long Island Rail Road into the city and visited the famous Edge. Edge NYC is the city’s highest outdoor sky deck with clear views of the city. Additionally, the students visited Mercado Little Spain where they were able to try various authentic Spanish foods and learn about Spanish culture.
“We hope this trip provides the seniors with a friendly and comfortable environment to be exposed to the culture of Spain, visit the city, and spend time with their friends,” said Dr. Pincay. “It’s important for students to interact with different cultures and see the city, especially since so many people visit and live in the city.”
This is a highly anticipated trip that many look forward to, giving seniors a chance to spend time with friends in their final year. A waitlist was also created due to the limited availability of spots and high student demand. Seniors appreciated this field trip as a celebration of their final high school year and an opportunity to step outside their comfort zone and experience new things.
“My senior Spanish trip to The Edge was unforgettable, with breathtaking views and a rush of excitement that made the experience truly one of a kind,” said senior Anisha Chakroborty.
“As a person who’s a little scared of heights, I give credit to my friends for forcing me to stand 1,131 feet above the city, which led to a beautiful memory and view I’ll never forget,” said senior Roshan Shaji.
The joint collaboration by the Spanish Club and ICC is only four years old, but it is a tradition that the clubs hope to continue for many years, allowing seniors to explore NYC and Spanish culture.
