As 2025 comes to a close, new trending artists have replaced older ones. Katseye, Sombr, Olivia Dean and The Marías are just a few examples of artists who have risen in popularity this year, according to recent data and accolades.
Katseye, composed of group members Yoonchae, Manon, Megan, Daniela, Lara and Sophia, is one of many global groups that debuted in 2024 under HYBE x Geffen. The members come from around the world, including Switzerland, the Philippines, South Korea and the United States, making them a multinational girl group. They were first introduced through a television documentary titled “Dream Academy,” which sparked excitement among fans ahead of their first song release. Their debut song, “Debut,” trended on social media for its vocals and choreography. From there, the group continued to rise. One of their songs, “Gnarly,” which initially received backlash, later became a hit and trended on several social media platforms. Katseye currently has 33.5 million monthly listeners on Spotify, ranking No. 152 worldwide.
“I feel like all trending artists today are basically the same. They are all focused on similar themes of love, and Katseye’s confidence in this truly inspires me,” eighth grader Bea Isaac said.
Similarly, Sombr, a solo artist who debuted in 2021 with his first single, “Nothing Left to Stay,” has been rising on the charts with songs such as “Back to Friends” and “12 to 12,” featuring Addison Rae. Many fans admire his vocal ability and his skill in blending genres such as indie pop and alternative rock. He has also gained popularity on TikTok, where he connects with younger audiences through his performances. Sombr is currently ranked No. 42 worldwide on Spotify with 53.4 million monthly listeners.
Olivia Dean, a 26-year-old solo artist, recently gained attention with her viral song, “Man I Need.” She debuted in late June 2023 with her album, “Messy.” Her popularity grew through consistent touring during the pandemic in a yellow van, which helped her build a strong connection with fans. Dean has emerged as a rising artist in pop and soul, using relatable lyrics and a jazz influence to connect with listeners. Ranked No. 47 worldwide on Spotify with 51.5 million monthly listeners, Olivia Dean has rapidly gained popularity.
“I have heard of Olivia Dean. I like her music so far. It is very relaxing. It is feel-good music, and I think Olivia Dean is everywhere right now,” chemistry teacher Ms. Eisenberg said.
The Marías, another rising band, gained popularity following the release of their debut album, “Cinema.” They have received two Grammy nominations, collaborated with Latin artists including Bad Bunny and Tainy and have gone viral on social media platforms such as TikTok. The Marías are ranked No. 135 worldwide on Spotify with 35.6 million monthly listeners.
“The Marías have risen a lot over the past year. I find their music on TikTok more often than before, and they match my vibe and music taste,” sophomore Emily Oh said. “Their music motivates me to draw and paint.”
Music continues to evolve as new artists and songs emerge, influencing students, educators and audiences alike. Through performances and social media platforms, these artists are creating trends and inspiring a new generation of listeners.
