When Harry Styles releases new music, it rarely goes unnoticed. His latest album, “Kiss All the Time, Disco, Occasionally,” blends disco-inspired production with modern pop, revealing a more experimental and ambitious side of Styles. Discussions of the album highlight its shift in sound and artistic direction, reinforcing Styles’ continued relevance in pop music.
The album drifts away from Styles’ earlier soft-pop music, instead leaning into electronic, disco and dance-pop influences. The opening track, “Aperture” sets a slow, atmospheric tone, layering soft vocals over a steady beat. As “KATTDO” progresses, the production becomes more layered and energetic, reflecting a clear willingness to experiment with structure, rhythm and genre. This shift places Styles within a broader trend of artists revitalizing disco elements within more contemporary music, such as Dua Lipa, Silk Sonic and Beyoncé.
“I have been listening to Harry Styles for as long as I can remember,” freshman Mayra Kaul stated. “I enjoy listening to his different songs as I can connect with them emotionally.”
Styles’ stands out in an industry that often favors consistency because he isn’t afraid to push creative boundaries, consistently evolving his sound instead of leaning on familiar formulas.
“I’m not a huge Harry Styles fan, but I’d heard this album was influenced by bands I love like Radiohead and LCD Soundsystem, so I was curious to check it out,” social studies teacher Mr. Laugen said. “I like that he’s updating his sound and pushing himself in new directions. Any artist willing to challenge themselves like that has my respect.”
The visuals for “KATTDO” reflect Styles’ shift into disco inspired music. The cover shows Styles in a dim outdoor scene illuminated by a disco ball. The design helps contribute to the retro and disco influences bestowed upon the album.
“I actually really like the album cover. It has a lot of personality, and feels kind of playful. The cover has a lot more of a unique style that stands out compared to his other pieces,” said eighth grader Abigail Allen.
Despite its success, the album has received mixed reactions. Some fans have complained that the album is too repetitive, overwhelming and confusing.
“I’m a Harry Styles fan, but for some reason, I just couldn’t wrap my head around this album,” freshman Hailey Nacewitz said. “It’s really energetic and fun, but some songs almost feel chaotic in a way.”
Ultimately, “KATTDO” marks an important step in Styles’ career, highlighting his growth and willingness to experiment while shaping the sound of modern pop music.
