On February 20 2026, entertainment companies HYBE and Geffen announced that KATSEYE’s Manon would take a temporary hiatus from group activities to focus on her health and wellbeing. The group stated that the other members would continue scheduled performances and events while supporting her during her time off.
KATSEYE is a six-member global girl group that formed through the reality competition show “The Debut: Dream Academy.” The group officially debuted in 2024, quickly gaining popularity due to the members’ music and their diversity, which helped them connect to a global audience. Their goal was to combine elements of the K-Pop training system with Western pop marketing to build a global following. Manon is a Swiss-Ghanaian singer and became one of the most notable members of the group, being popular among international fans. She is the only Black member in the group, making her symbolically important for representation and diversity.
After HYBE and Geffen’s announcement, Manon herself posted a message to fans on social media. She reassured them that she was taking care of herself and thanked fans for their concern and support. However, she also suggested that some aspects of the situation were outside her control. This started to make fans speculate that there were other reasons involved with the hiatus, sparking major debate.
Many fans were supportive, wishing Manon well, while others had been concerned with how she had been treated unfairly within the group. Fans have noticed that in the show, edits were framed in a way for Manon to be portrayed as “unprofessional” or “left out,” creating suspicions of mistreatment. This led fans to theorize that her hiatus might involve conflicts with management and systemic issues in the industry, in addition to racism and discrimination. Controversy further intensified when fans noticed that Manon liked a social media post discussing the mistreatment of Black girls in music groups.
“I really liked Manon in KATSEYE, so I hope she’s okay and taking care of herself. At the same time, it makes me wonder what it means for the future of the group. I can just hope that KATSEYE will eventually run as normal again when she’s feeling better,” sophomore Annhad Kaur said.
Many former Black women in girl groups spoke out for Manon in support. One was Leigh-Anne Pinnock, who was a member of the popular UK girl group, Little Mix. She had faced discrimination first-hand, with many hate comments spread online about her. Normani, former member of Fifth Harmony, also shared concerns in an interview about her experiences, feeling that her abilities were downplayed.
“This whole situation made me step back and think about how we really need to treat singers and idols better,” freshman Hannah Jung said.
Manon’s hiatus sparked bigger conversations about representation and fairness within music industries, as well as how women of color are treated within global girl groups. Black women have constantly been overlooked and tokenized in the music industry. The official explanation is, still, that she took time off to focus on her well-being, and both the labels and Manon herself explain she’s okay.
“I don’t know much about KATSEYE, but situations like this can still spark conversations about diversity in the music industry. I hope she gets the support she needs,” math teacher Ms. Joseph said.
Although it’s unclear the deeper meaning behind Manon’s leave or whether Manon is coming back, the love and support she receives from her fans are the reason why female Black artists are important to music.
