“The Devil Wears Prada” movie series is a massive fashion and pop culture staple. Actors Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway shone in both the first and second movie, creating iconic and hilarious moments remembered by many.
“The first movie was really intriguing. I can’t wait to see how the second one turns out!” sophomore Susie Mizuguchi said.
The first movie follows a journalism graduate, Andy Sachs, played by Anne Hathaway, who lands a job as an assistant to the editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep. With aspirations to become a journalist and no interest in fashion, the movie comedically shows Andy’s struggles at her new job. Released in 2006, this comedy-drama film directed by David Frankel and produced by Wendy Finerman created a franchise representing ambition, sacrifice and identity in the cut-throat fashion industry, becoming a massive box office success worldwide.
“It just became one of those movies everybody knows.” junior Aileen Philip said.
“The Devil Wears Prada” movie has earned over 21 wins for the movie and 50 nominations of the actors and actresses. Most notably, Meryl Streep won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy in 2007. The film was also nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Actress for Streep and Best Costume Design for Patricia Field. Along with these achievements, the movie received major critical and commercial success, grossing over $326 million worldwide on a $35 million budget.
After the massive hit of the first movie, the series continued with the newly released “The Devil Wears Prada 2” a decade later. The story follows the same protagonist, Andy Sachs, coming back to Runway after some time exploring her own career path. The comedic adventure continues with Sachs back at her old workplace with the goal to save Runway’s image after a scandal. The release led to a new audience, bringing back excitement from the late 2000s.
“I have not seen the second movie yet, but I am excited to watch it. Part of me is nervous that the new movie will be a disappointing follow up to the first, as sequels are typically lackluster in my opinion, but I am looking forward to watching it, nonetheless,” science teacher Ms. Mondello said.
“I really wanna watch the second one, the first one was really good so I’m excited,” sophomore Riley Zembera said.
“The Devil Wears Prada” films quickly gained popularity and after its initial success, the second release had a similar successful output. The movies took fans on an emotional and funny rollercoaster, leaving a lasting impact.
